SPRING MINI SESSIONS!

I know this is later than last year's sessions, but due to recovering from shoulder surgery, I had to back them up a bit.  But don't worry, if you are looking to have them for Easter, just be sure to let me know and I will get them to you in time.

And now - for some samples from last year's Mini Sessions.

(oh, and we are planning that there will be bunnies again this year)

Book your session now - spots are limited and are booked on a first come basis!

I have had the honor of taking their maternity photos with their little boy Hudson, his newborn photos, all his first year photos and now get the honor of doing it again for his brother on the way.  Here are a few of my favorites from their maternity session a couple weeks ago!  I can't wait to photograph these two boys together for a long time!

Congrats Wyke Family!  Can't wait to meet the newest little one...

{Sam} Regent Square Newborn Photographer | Pittsburgh Newborn Baby Photographer http://www.heatherlindsay-photography.com/blog/2016/5/-sam-regent-square-newborn-photographer-pittsburgh-newborn-baby-photographer Meet Baby Sam!

He is the third little boy for my dear friends Jess & Chris and was WIDE AWAKE for 90% of his session.  So I started thinking this was just going to be one of those wide awake sessions, and then he fell asleep at the end!  We ended up with a good mix of both awake and sleepy photos.  But once he fell asleep, I knew my limits and didn't try to pose him too much...

see, WIDE awake!  But look at that eye contact.

ahh, sweet sleep.  such a precious baby

and this shot... oh my heart!  I happen to adore these three kids like they are my own.  It took some work (and Photoshop magic) to make this happen, but so worth it.  Sibling shots are always worth the effort! Congratulations Kissell Family!  I love your sweet family!

this one was specifically for her grandma and I love it.  I Samuel 1:27 "For this child I have prayed".

she is just the sweetest!

I adore new family photos in black & white, especially these where you can see how absolutely smitten they are with her! "the family that loves the penquins stays together", wait that's not a thing? I love a family that starts them young. Go Pens!

(hint, hint to all you family of expecting moms - maternity and newborn sessions make great gifts!)  We met up at Round Hill Farm in August for their session.  Round Hill Farm is a favorite of mine for outdoor sessions... so many great spots.  And on this particular day the sun setting gave us the perfect golden light.  Here are some of my favorites...

such a good looking couple... (wait till you see their little man, he is adorable!)

Annie was perfection!  That blue dress was gorgeous on her.

one of my absolute favorites...

hello beautiful light! I know the dad's usually feel really silly doing some of these shots, but this is just the sweetest.

Congrats Annie & Brandon!  Stay tuned for Bryson's newborn photos...

{Ranallo Family} Murrysville Maternity Photographer http://www.heatherlindsay-photography.com/blog/2016/5/-ranallo-family-murrysville-maternity-photographer Well Hello!  This little blog has been a little neglected for, oh too many months to talk about.  I was doing so well keeping up and then the craziness of the fall photo season hit, then holidays and I looked up and it was May. (gah) haha!  So while it would be easy to just start with what is current, (believe me, there are a set of twins from a few weeks ago I am dying to share) I don't want to not share all the good stuff that happened since my last post.  So, without further ado, we play catch up. Starting with this sweet family...

We got together in August for their maternity photos.  We had gorgeous weather at Oak Hollow Park in Penn Township.  Below are a few of my favorites

These two have were high school sweethearts!  I love stories like theirs... and now they are expecting their first baby.  A little girl!

Such a beautiful momma!
Congratulations Ranallo Family!  I can't wait to share you sweet girl's newborn photos in an upcoming blog post.

{The Why} Why you should be picky about your newborn photographer http://www.heatherlindsay-photography.com/blog/2015/9/-the-why-why-you-should-be-picky-about-your-newborn-photographer Having a baby is one of the most special and memorable times in your life.  And newborn photos are some of the most important photos you will have done.  They are one of the best investments you will make.  I say investment, because that is what they are... an investment, not an expense! Newborn photos will last a lifetime or longer and capture a fleeting moment in your baby's life.  Your little one will only be that squishy, bendable, teeny tiny, sleepy baby for a very short time.  They change so much in those first few weeks; those first few days are worth documenting professionally.  Invest in quality newborn photography... it is a decision you will not regret.

There are a lot of photographers to choose from.  But newborn photography is unlike any other kind of photography.  Newborn photography is very hands on and you need someone who knows how to carefully handle and safely pose your baby.  The safety of your baby is the highest priority.  Just because someone lists newborn photography on their website does not make them qualified to do this.  Please do not just select any photographer for your newborn photos.  Choose a photographer who specializes in or has a lot of experience with them. They may be the best wedding or portrait photographer around, but you want someone who is experienced in posing, caring for and photographing an infant.

You should also select a photographer whose style you like.  This is important! Choose someone who's style of newborn photography you love.  Do you like posed newborn photos?  Or do you prefer a more laid back documentary style?  Which do they offer? Neither is better than the other, but they are different. So choose a photographer whose gallery showcases photos you would want to hang on your wall.

With there being a lot of photographers to choose from, and not all them specializing in newborn photography, it goes without saying that there are also a lot of not so great newborn photos out there.  I am not trying to be critical here - I look back at my own early work in newborn photography and think how far I have come (and will continue to go).  The photos that a photographer puts on their website should represent their best work. You don't want to hire someone who only has a few good photos to show. So here are a few things that you should be looking for...

1) Safety in posing.  A photographer should never put a baby in a position where they are unsupported or uncomfortable.  You've probably seen the adorable 'head in hands' pose.  What you should know is that no newborn can support their own head in their hands.  That final image is a composite of two images where the baby is fully supported in each image and with some help from Photoshop, the final image emerges.  This is the same for any pose where a baby is lying on something high or hanging from anything (a scale or branch).

Here is an example: in this photo she needed to be supported to keep her head on her hands. Her hands are also purple.  In the final edited photography, I was able to remove the mom's finger, even her skin tone and purple fingers and clean up the background.

2) Buried face.  A baby's face should always be up and forward, never into the blanket.  When laying on their belly and photographed from the side, you should be able to see both of baby's eyes.  When their face is into the blanket it looks very suffocating.  This is one of the most frequent things I see when looking through galleries.

Here is an example: This is one of the first newborn photos I took - I'm almost embarrassed of how bad a photo it is (but we all have to start somewhere).  The baby's face is buried, the shot is way to close, it has an overall magenta/purple hue and her skin tone could use some evening.

3) Nice angles.  No one wants a double chin in their photos, even your newborn.  They just aren't flattering.  Neither are shots up the nose.  Look for pleasing angles.

Here is an example: this angle is not flattering up the nose, there are some skin issues that need corrected and this photo is just all around poorly exposed.

4) Good post processing.  This is a good place to mention that when you hire a photographer, especially in newborn photography, you aren't just paying them to take the photographs.  You are paying them for their time and expertise in editing to perfect the images and create a gallery that has continuity. Almost every image in newborn photography has some level of editing needed.  Babies skin tones are often uneven, and tend to be more red or yellow and some have purple hands and feet.  They also can have baby acne or scratches and dry, peeling skin.  All of this is perfectly normal for newborns, but not something you want to distract from your photos.  As your photographer, it is my job to clean those things up in post processing.  Additionally, it is my job to ensure that your baby looks the same from image to image and that your final images have a continuity about them that allow them to be displayed together.

Here are some examples: These sweet twins couldn't be more different - look how different their skin tones are.  And while I don't want to misrepresent them in the final image, I do think it looks better to have their skin tones more similar.  This shot was also too dark, so it was lightened and the white balance adjusted.

This sweet boy's skin tone was a bit yellow from dealing with jaundice, and he had the beginning of baby acne and some scratches.  I adjusted the tone and evened his skin.

I hope that this helps you as you choose the newborn photographer that is right for you.  While I hope you love my work and want me to photograph your newborn, that's not what this post was about.  It is really to inform you that not every photographer is a newborn photographer.  Be selective, and remember you get what you pay for.  You only get one shot at newborn photographs... make sure you get images you love!

{Wyatt} - Monroeville Newborn Photographer http://www.heatherlindsay-photography.com/blog/2015/9/-wyatt---monroeville-newborn-photographer Meet Wyatt!  This is little man was not happy to be having his photos taken at all.  He really preferred to stay cuddled up with his momma.  But he hung in just long enough to get some really cute shots.

Wyatt's dad played football for Wake Forrest, so we had to do a shot with his jersey and football.

I love a sibling shot!  Sweet Grea was so good for these pictures.

See what I'm talking about... look at the connection with his momma!

{Ben & Lisa} - Irwin Maternity Photographer http://www.heatherlindsay-photography.com/blog/2015/9/-ben-lisa---irwin-maternity-photographer I've been a little lack in my blogging - this happens to me every summer because I get caught up in enjoying nice weather and forget to share all the great photo sessions that have happened.  So it's time to catch up.

First up ~this beautiful momma...

Lisa wanted traditional maternity pictures, but she also wanted to do something a little different.  I loved the idea of capturing the natural, beautiful sexiness of pregnancy.  These are two of my favorite...

And here are a few of my favorites from her outdoor session.  She and Ben were so photogenic!

Golden light and a pregnant belly... love!

Seriously, how cute are they?

I love letter blocks!

So happy for Ben & Lisa and the arrival of baby Hudson!  Stay tuned for his newborn pictures.

{2015 Pricing & Packages} http://www.heatherlindsay-photography.com/blog/2015/5/-2015-pricing-packages It's an exiting time at Heather Lindsay Photography.  After a lot of consideration, I have created some new session offerings and have restructured my sessions and pricing.  And I'm moving to an all inclusive option!  This is actually where I started with my pricing when I first began my business, but moved away from it out of concern that it wouldn't appeal to clients or would seem too expensive.

I posted a survey a few weeks back and I received some wonderful feedback where most folks indicated they looked for all inclusive options.  And over the last few years, I've come to the realization that not everyone is going to think I'm affordable, and that's okay.  I am good at what I do and there is value in my work.  If you are looking for the cheapest photographer, I am probably not the right person for you.  If you are looking for someone who loves what they do and is excited to create your images and capture your memories, then I'm your girl.  That said, I also understand that there is a reasonable price range to be in and I hope that with the options I have created, there will be something that fits into most people's budgets.

For simplicity sake, all packages include the digital files with full printing rights.  Most include a print credit as well, because for the love... please print your beautiful photos and display them.  Isn't that why you took them in the first place? (I'll step off my soap box now.) Here are my new offerings and pricing along with some information about them...

BABY OPTIONS

The Newborn Session$300 - Newborn sessions are posed sessions that take place in my home studio.  They last 2-3 hours and are very easy and casual as we photography your newborn and allow for time to feed and comfort.  These sessions are best done in the first 2 weeks of your little ones life.  This window can be extended for extended hospital/NICU stays.  As the mom of a NICU baby, I completely understand the stress of those early days in the NICU and we will make your session happen just as soon as your baby is home and able to be photographed.  All newborn sessions include a complimentary maternity session.  I understand not all moms are interested in these and while I encourage them, I won't force it on you.  You will receive all the digital files of your final images from your newborn session and 10 images from your maternity session as well as a $40 print credit.

The First 48 Session $300 - First 48 sessions are lifestyle/documentary style sessions that typically take place in the hospital within the first 48 hours after your little one arrives.  These are not birth sessions! They are a pulled back and casual look at your time with your new baby and family.  I will spend 1-2 hours with you in your hospital room. We will photograph the baby and your new family and take a very relaxed approach.  Again, I understand not all births go as planned, so if you have booked a First 48 session and have a NICU stay or something else unforeseen that prohibits this session from happening, we can do it in your home in those first 48 hours after you are home, or you may covert your session to a Newborn Session.  First 48 Sessions include all the digital files of your final images.  There is not a print credit with this session due to the style of these photos.  They may be best displayed in an album.

Brand New Baby Package $500 - This includes a Maternity, Newborn and First 48 Session. This is the perfect combination to capture all of the moments of your journey from pregnancy to newborn.  Because the newborn and First 48 sessions are different in style, you can be confident that you will not be duplicating anything by having both.

Baby Steps Milestone Package $500-$700 - Your baby's first year is going to fly by.  It is truly amazing how much your little one will change in that first year.  Baby Steps Milestone packages are meant for those who value quality portraits of their little one and want to capture these first year milestones.  The best part of this package is it is completely customizable.  You choose between 3, 4 or 5 milestones and which ones you want to document.  The milestone options are:

  • Newborn ** this session must be one of your choices**
  • 3-4 months (when baby can lift head while on belly)
  • 6-7 months (when baby can sit up unassisted)
  • 9 months
  • 1 year
  • Choose how many: 3 sessions - $500, 4 session - $600, 5 session - $700

PORTRAIT OPTIONS

The Family & Children Portrait Session $200 - These are standard portrait sessions that take place in an outside location of your choosing.  We will spend about ninety minutes together capturing some posed and some lifestyle shots.  These sessions are meant to be fun and reflect who you and your family are.  Sessions include the digital files with full printing rights as well as a $30 print credit.

The Mini Session $125 - a shortened 45 minute portrait session for up to 4 people and take place in an outside location of your choosing.  These sessions are perfect for smaller groups with a smaller number of final images. Session includes 10-12 digital files with full printing rights as well as a $20 print credit.

The Itty Bitty Session $65 - as the name suggests, this is a quick 20 minute session that takes place in an outside location of your choosing.  These sessions are for 1-2 people and yield 3-5 final images.  They are perfect for capturing a photo for a birthday invite or holiday card or when you just need a couple updated photos of your sweet kiddo to share with grandma. Session include digital files with full printing rights but do not include a print credit.

The last new thing I am offering is a Referral Program.  I've actually done this with referral cards in the past, but this seems like an easier way.  Here's the scoop.  You can earn discounts off your future session by referring family and friends to Heather Lindsay Photography.  For every NEW client referred that books and completes a session with me, you (as the referring client) will get $25 off a future session!  It's the fastest way to a free session!! So go tell your friends about me...

So that's it... That is the new structure of Heather Lindsay Photography.  It is truly my hope that this new structure will appeal to more folks and fit most budgets.  I believe everyone should have the option to get quality custom photography.  I look forward to working you soon to capture your most precious memories!

{Pricing Structure} A Little Survey & A Giveaway http://www.heatherlindsay-photography.com/blog/2015/4/-pricing-structure-a-little-survey Spring is here... finally!  And that always brings a time of clean out and simplification for me.  It usually starts in my closet and then moves to the kids closets (never my husband's closet though), and then turns to an entire purge and restructure of my house to make things feel streamlined and less chaotic.  With two young kids that feeling doesn't always last long, but I'll savor the moment.

This year the desire to simplify is spilling over into my photography business, specifically for my pricing and package structures.  The hard part is I don't purchase my own packages so I don't really know if how they are structured works best.  So I'd like to ask for some input from all of you... what pricing and package structure do you prefer?  Do you want all the digital negatives to print on your own? Do you want prints or albums or canvases?  Do you want a little of both? There are so many ways to structure pricing, there really isn't a right or wrong way.  And no one way is going to please everyone.  But I've never really asked this question.  So - for your help in giving me some feedback by way of the comments below - I will randomly pick one commenter to win a complimentary standard session with me.  (That's a $75 value - just for leaving your thoughts below!! How easy is that?)

I've narrowed things down to these three structures:

  • All Inclusive Packages - this includes the time of the photographer, editing of the images and digital files of the final images.  This is usually a higher price because it is all inclusive and you get all the files for your use.
  • One Price with Print Credit - this includes the time of the photographer, editing of the images and then a credit value to order prints, specialty items or digital files of the final images.  This is also often a higher price, but you get a large portion (60% or so) back to purchase your images in whatever format you choose.
  • Separate Session Fees & Packages - this includes the time of the photographer and editing of the images covered in your session fee.  All digital files or prints or specialty items are ordered via packages or al a carte.  This is usually a lower initial investment as you just have the session fee cost and no obligation to purchase anything beyond that; but often ends at a similar price point when you finalize your order.

I'd love to hear your feedback on these options and what you look for in pricing and package options when selecting a photographer.  And remember... just for sharing your thoughts, you could win a free session from me!  I will leave the comments open until Wednesday April 15th (in honor of tax day...  because who really loves April 15th? Let's make something nice happen that day.) I will then post the winner and details on how to schedule your free session.  ** session will take place in Pittsburgh area, must be local or able to get to Pittsburgh for the session **

Thank you in advance for your feedback!

And just to leave you with something springy... blue skies and flower buds are on their way!

{Dawson} - Harrison City Newborn Photographer http://www.heatherlindsay-photography.com/blog/2015/1/-dawson---harrison-city-newborn-photographer Meet Dawson! This little mister made his debut right before Christmas and came to see me on New Years Eve. He was my last newborn shoot of 2014 and he was perfect! He also has the best head of hair!

He was really awake when we started and look at the eye contact he gave me...

Then he settled into a nice deep sleep and we got some great shots.

Dawson's big sister Brynn wasn't feeling the pictures at first, but we only needed one... and she delivered.

{Brinley & Riley} - Irwin Newborn Twin Photographer http://www.heatherlindsay-photography.com/blog/2014/12/-brinley-riley---north-huntingdon-newborn-twin-photographer Meet Riley & Brinley! They weren't due to arrive until January, but just had to get here for the Thanksgiving AND Christmas fun.  After a few weeks in the NICU, they were ready for their photo shoot.  They were great for our session and I just adore the shots of them together.  Enjoy a peak...

They are fraternal twins, and really do look so different.  It made it easy on me to tell them apart.

Riley...

Brinley...

one of my favorites...

Congratulations Rachel & Matt!  They are perfect!  Look forward to more photoshoots with these cutie girls!

{Maeve} - Pittsburgh Newborn & Family Photographer http://www.heatherlindsay-photography.com/blog/2014/10/-maeve---pittsburgh-newborn-photographer Meet Miss Maeve!  I went to see this sweet baby girl last weekend for some newborn photos and a few family photos.  At three weeks old, she was outside the 'normal' newborn window but she handled her photo shoot like a pro.  Here's a peek at my favorites from last week...

Some 'Hail to Pitt' colors for her Dad's alumni

And a couple from the family session.  Gavin is an active almost 3 year old and also wasn't thrilled with me taking his picture.  So getting these two where he is looking at me AND smiling... WIN!

Congratulations Garrett and Linsey! You have a wonderful family!

{Remi} - North Huntingdon Newborn Photographer http://www.heatherlindsay-photography.com/blog/2014/10/-remi---north-huntingdon-newborn-photographer Meet Remi!  I just realized I never blogged about this sweet baby boy.  He came to see back in the summer for his newborn session.  He was a super sweet little guy and was so good for his session.  We even got to sneak outside and enjoy the warm weather. These are a few of my favorites...

Congratulations again Lauren!  He is precious!
